24.5.2010 00:52 EU RECOGNISES WORLDFENGUR AS THE FIRST DIGITAL HORSE PASSPORT
WorldFengur has the honour of being the first database recognised by the EU as holding digital passports. The EU requires that passports are issued for all horses in countries that export horse meat to EU countries. All medication the horse has ever received is to be documented in the passport, thereby indicating whether the horse is suitable to be slaughtered for human consumption or not.
On Iceland, however, passports are only issued for live horses when they are exported. Since Iceland also exports meat to EU countries, complying with the new EU rules would mean issuing passports for all horses on Iceland as well. This would mean an enormous amount of work for Iceland, who as a non-EU member is not obliged to issue passports for live horses in the country at this stage.
This issue was discussed in June 2009 with EU representatives by a WorldFengur delegate, and the EU officials indicated that WorldFengur might serve as a database containing digital passports that hold all medication records, thus saving the work of having to issue paper passports for tens of thousands of horses in the country.
This was taken up on Iceland and consequently MAST, the Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority, was able to announce this week that WorldFengur has received EU recognition to function in this capacity. This is a first within the EU, which may pave the way in this direction for other countries as well.
